9 Fun Things To Do This Weekend in Denver and the Mountains

Denver has some killer events lined up this weekend. Start it off by going to the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo, followed by the Denver International Sportsmen’s Exposition and fun mountain events and more.  Wherever your plans take you, make sure to look at this roundup of events happening in Denver.

The Stock Show & Rodeo: 

Held every January at the National Western Complex, the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo is the world’s largest stock show; and each year is bigger and better than the last, with more than 15,000 animals, rodeos, bull riders, horse shows, livestock competitions, auctions and booths selling everything from cowboy boots to Native American jewelry.

Winter Park Express Ski Train: 

The Winter Park Express by Amtrak has returned for its third year of service. The train allows people to hit the slopes during the day and return to Denver to spend their aprés ski exploring The Mile High City’s award-winning, chef-driven cuisine, more than 70 local craft breweries, unique live music venues and 10,000 hotel rooms. It’s also a great option for the weekend visitor who wants to get some turns in while they’re in Denver. New this year, Amtrak has increased the round-trip service to include the first two Fridays of each month. The train runs on weekends, including holidays; one-way tickets start at $29 per person. The train runs from now through March 31.

Denver International Sportsmen’s Exposition: 

The Rocky Mountain region’s largest outdoor, fishing, hunting and travel show returns with more than 500 exhibiting companies. Plus, hundreds of free seminars as well as family-friendly activities.

The exposition runs tomorrow through Sunday at the Colorado Convention Center, 700 14th St., Denver.  Tickets are $16 and can get them here.

Big Beers Belgians & Barleywines Festival:  The beer festival in Vail features exotic and strong styles, now in its 19th year. Dinners, seminars and workshops are held throughout the celebration. Tomorrow is the last day.

Ullr Fest:  Festival celebrates the winter god of Norse mythology, now in its 55th year. Shenanigans include frying pans, viking hats, Ullympic competitions and a floats parade.  Tomorrow is the last day for this event as well, but it’s never too late.  The event is in Breckenridge.

Estes Park Winter Festival:  MLK Holiday weekend featuring ice skating downtown, ski and snowboard competitions, craft beer, food, kids activities, live music and chili cookoff.  The event runs from Sat-Sun, January 19-20 in Estes Park.

Cowboy Downhill:  Professional cowboys from across the U.S., as well as Australia, Canada, Europe and Mexico compete in a race down Headwall near the base.  The event takes place on Monday, January 21 at 1:30 p.m. at Steamboat Ski Resort, Steamboat Springs

Ouray Ice Festival:  The Ice festival is the biggest ice climbing festival in North America, featuring world’s best climbers and 100 educational climbing clinics.  The event takes place from Thur-Sun (Jan24-27).

Winter X Games:  The X Games in Aspen, features the world’s best athletes in skiing, snowboarding, and snowmobiling compete another year at Buttermilk.
