The Great Sand Dunes of Colorado! We went, we experienced, we explored and we were awe struck! Amazing, seriously amazing. There are really no words to express the magnitude of amazement in these gigantic mounds of sand that goes for miles. As you drive up to the sand dunes you see this small patch of hills that are obviously very different from the surrounding landscape. At first glance the seem small and almost like an allusion. As you drive closer to the park entrance you realize how large and expansive these hills really are. You can see small little specks on the hills, then you realize, these are people!
When you start to ascend towards the hills you step into a large area of wet sand. There is a small flow of water passing through. It is the Medano Creek which comes from the Sangre De Cristo Mountains, it runs through in the summer and the peak season to catch it is in late May-early June. We missed it, so next time we will be sure to catch the full stream! We did, however, have just enough to cover our feet and cool us off.
What kept me amazed was not only the massive mounds of endless sand but that directly behind you are mountains! It was a very surreal feeling as well as beautiful. My entire family enjoyed the experience, we all felt like we just saw one of the wonders of the world. Seriously.
We were also informed of a great local pool just past the sand dunes that has a small water park, with an old school, local feel. Unfortunately, we arrived too late, since it was the 4th of July the pool was closing at 5pm, so we will have to save that for the next adventure! Along with Zapata Falls!
Please share your experiences with us, if you have any adventures at the Great Sand Dunes or any other Colorado adventures, we would love to hear them!
