Mourvedre from Jumilla, Spain

Looking for a great bottle of red wine to take to a dinner party, Jazz in the Park, your patio…pretty much anywhere? Well this is it! And it’s under $15, but drinks like a wine that would sell for more than double that. We read so much about white wines and Rose’s during the Summer months that I wanted to feature a pretty big red that’s still Summer appropriate to those that have trouble with red during these months.

This wine is 100% old vine Mourvèdre (Monastrell in Spain). These wines are typically high in alcohol content and tannic. If you enjoy this varietal, you should also try “GSM” (Grenache, Syrah and Mouredre) blends. I promise to review one in the upcoming months.

You will open the bottle and be taken away by it’s fragrance. The word, “fragrance” gets a bad wrap sometimes, but I mean it in a very good way here and you will understand at your first inhale. It’s the first word that comes to mind following the pop and “ssszzs” of the cork when you smell the dark fruit and leather. I would love a candle that could encapsulate this scent. This is gorgeous. Inky and purple as you pour it into your glass. It’s intensely fruity and juicy, full of blackberry, raspberry, cherry, and chocolate. The wine finishes with an interesting combination of toast and spice mixed with an herbal note and noticeable heat from the alcohol.

This wine is very drinkable, but could be aged if desired for a few years and/or decanted before serving. We just use our Wine Soiree, which isa must have in the Williams household. Definitely the best aerator on the market.

Jorge Ordonas is the importer for this wine and you really can’t go wrong with any wines he has a hand in. I have enjoyed this wine with simple grilled meats and veggies, complex Italian dishes, and clean Mediterranean cuisine. It’s just as versatile as it is tasty. Get a bottle, or a case!
