The Battle of Normandy is remembered. It was 68 years ago today that thousands of US soldiers fought and died altering the course of history! Being a Navy Veteran I honor my fellow soldiers each and every day, but this day holds many high respects and recognition. This battle resulted in the Allied liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50 mile stretch on the coast of France’s Normandy region. The success of the invasion was really the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany.
The meaning of “D-Day” has been explained by many scholars that it stood for “decision day” or “disembarkation day”, but most likely comes from the army’s use of the term to mean “undefined day”, or the first day of any operation.
D-DAY invasion involved 5,000 ships carrying men and vehicles across the English Channel as well as 800 planes dropping over 13,000 men in parachutes, 300 planes dropped bombs and over 100,000 Allied troops made it to shore that day.
